Conservative Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease occurs when bacteria gets below the gumline resulting in the loss of attachment between the gums and teeth. The bone around the tooth will recede and possibly result in the loss of a tooth or teeth. Gum disease is silent, chronic, and usually painless. The conservative treatment for gum disease is called scaling and root smoothing . Scaling and root smoothing is non-surgical and involves deep, below-the-gums cleaning (scaling) of the root surface where the bacteria/tartar is attached. The gums are numbed for this procedure and is usually done over one or two visits. Dr. Prush has dental hygienists who perform this procedure.
